The Maize Growers Association was formed in 1988 by a group of farmers who identified a need for research and development of the maize crop to improve farm business profits.
The MGA is independently run 'by growers for growers'. Our farmer led R&D committees commission research on maize agronomy, nutrition and enviromental issues. The results are quickly transfered to members through monthly mailings, demonstration sites, with replicated trials on member's farms, conferences and study tours.
MGA members also have telephone access to two agronomists and our nutrition consultant.
Farmers growing maize may obtain this valuable information by joining the MGA for an annual subscription of £85.00 + 17.5 % VAT = £99.88

Maize drilling
With most maize now in the ground and starting to come up, weeds will be the next challenge for the maize and you. The May mailing is in the post and includes some useful tips from Simon Draper. Members can access this information on the website under the heading of Agronomy weed control. There is also a herbicide guide, highlighting the right chemicals for the different weeds.

NEW DRY MATTER RECOMENDATIONS FOR FORAGE MAIZE
During a recent MGA desktop review of European forage maize activity, it became clear that UK silage dry matters appear to be lower than the optimums recommended to farmers elsewhere and it was with this in mind that we decided to review our advice to members.
There are two issues to tackle.
Firstly why is dry matter content important and secondly, can we achieve these higher dry matters in the UK?
John Morgan has written a very interesting and informative article about this subject for members, which can be found in the news section of the website.
We would encourage any arable farmer thinking of growing maize as a cash or break crop to join the Maize Growers Association for professional advice and information on the growing and environmental considerations needed to grow the crop.
